Undergraduate students at City are invited to apply for the Global Leadership Award for an opportunity to study in India or Vietnam in 2024.

Travel abroad with the Global Leadership Award

Travel abroad for a month over the summer and develop your ability to engage with the world and create an impact.

The Global Leadership Award offers the opportunity to complete a fully funded period abroad during the summer break, while engaging with international leaders and developing leadership and workplace skills. Participants will travel as part of a large group of City students.

The Global Opportunities team at City will provide support throughout the process, from applying for a passport or visa, to making travel and accommodation arrangements and during your time abroad.

Eligibility

Any undergraduate student at City who is not in their final year of study.

What to expect

There are three stages to the programme:

Step one: Pre-departure skills workshop

Participants will complete a pre-departure workshop in March 2024. The sessions will involve:

  • Getting to know the other participants on the programme before travelling abroad.
  • Setting individual goals and objectives for the summer programme.
  • Practical guidance on travelling abroad, to prepare for the summer travel abroad and a future international career.

Step two: travel abroad

Participants will then travel abroad for one month between June and July 2024.

For 2024 we are collaborating with Common Purpose to offer two destinations: Bangalore, India and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

Both programmes will involve a mix of cultural immersion activities, leadership training and group project work for local organisations and businesses. You will not only learn all about your host city but also develop key leadership, communication, problem-solving and project management skills.

Bangalore, India

Overview

Travelling to Bangalore, India with a large group of City students, you will learn about business practices abroad and develop the ability to work in an international environment. You will work on real-life initiatives and projects, developing hugely beneficial skills and boosting your employability and CV.

Bangalore is considered to be one of the fastest-growing global major metropolises as well as the "Silicon Valley of India".

Programme details

During the first three days, you will have the opportunity to participate in a programme of cultural immersion, cultural activities, and industry and community visits alongside a group of university students from Bangalore.

During the following three weeks, participants will complete a project for a local organisation with a group of students. The local organisation and project may or may not be connected to your field of study; the focus is on developing key transferable skills and to be exposed to different industries and working cultures.

Participants won’t be doing administrative work, rather they will work on a real-life project with clear deliverables and outcomes that the organisation wants support and ideas on. At the end of the project, you will present your work to the project leader and relevant colleagues to get feedback.

  • Duration: 4 weeks.
  • Dates: 23rd June to 20th July 2024.
  • Location: Bangalore, India.
  • Number of places: 25 City students.
  • Travel and accommodation: arranged by the City Global Opportunities team.
  • Global skills: driving for results, creative problem-solving, interculturally aware, inclusive, leading.

Funding and Costs

  • Accommodation, travel and subsistence will be paid for by the City Global Opportunities team.
  • There will be no fees for participating in the programme.

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

Overview

Travelling to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, with a large group of City students, you will learn about business practices abroad and develop the ability to work in an international environment. You will work on real-life initiatives and projects, developing hugely beneficial skills and boosting your employability and CV.

Ho Chi Minh City is a bustling metropolis and major business destination, recently named “Asia’s Leading Business Travel Destination 2022” at the World Travel Awards.

Programme details

During the first three days, you will have the opportunity to participate in a programme of cultural immersion, cultural activities, and industry and community visits.

During the following three weeks, participants will complete a project for a local organisation with a group of students. The local organisation and project may or may not be connected to your field of study; the focus is on developing key transferable skills and to be exposed to different industries and working cultures.

Step three: reflection workshops and award

Participants will complete a reflection workshop in October 2024. The sessions will involve:

  • Reflecting on your experience abroad.
  • Careers guidance on articulating your experience when applying for work or future study.
  • Learning about further opportunities to gain global skills and travel abroad.

How to apply

Submit an application via the online form.

You will be asked to confirm your first and second choice of destination.

Joint applications of up to two students are accepted.

The deadline for applications is the 7th January 2024.
