The Academic  Writing Course

This seven-week English for Academic Purposes (EAP) course is designed for international students and for students whose first language is not English, though all students are welcome to join.

The course is offered both in-person and online (Microsoft Teams). It is free and not assessed.

Course aim and content

The aim of the course is to provide an overview of academic writing in English and to help you to develop your fluency in academic writing through language and writing practice. The focus is academic writing (i.e. essays, reports and research papers), but the content should be useful for all types of written work.

The course will include:

  • developing an appropriate academic style
  • structuring, paragraphing and cohesion
  • writing effective sentences
  • citation and referencing
  • using reading in your writing
  • making your voice clear when using sources
  • considering assessment criteria and essay questions
  • in-class writing exercises
  • grammar and vocabulary for academic writing
  • editing your work

Class times for in-person courses

The course runs for seven weeks (1.5 hours per week) on Tuesdays and Thursdays from week commencing Monday 7th October.
