EAP Part 1: Academic Writing

This four-week English for Academic Purposes (EAP) course is for international students and for students whose first language is not English. The course is offered both face-to-face and online (Microsoft Teams). It is free and not assessed.
Course Aims
The focus of EAP Part 1 is to develop your academic writing skills. The course focuses on academic style, the essay writing process, paragraphing and cohesion, and using reading in your writing. You will also do some short writing exercises. The focus is essay writing, but the content should be useful for all types of academic work, including dissertations.
Course Outline
Week 1 - Introducing work and making your purpose clear
Structuring essay and dissertation introductions; making your purpose clear when you write
Week 2 - Citing sources
Using reading in your writing and avoiding plagiarism; making your voice clear when using the work of others
Week 3 - The essay writing process
Structuring an academic essay; considering marking criteria when planning an essay; analysing essay questions
Week 4 - Paragraphing, editing your work and academic style
Making writing cohesive; academic style; avoiding common mistakes
Class Times
This course has now finished and will run again in autumn term.
