EAP Part 1: Academic Writing

This four-week English for Academic Purposes (EAP) course is for international students and for students whose first language is not English. The course is offered both in-person and online (Microsoft Teams). It is free and not assessed.
Course aim and content
The aim of EAP Part 1 is to provide an overview of academic writing in English and to develop your academic writing skills. The course focuses on academic style, the essay writing process, paragraphing, and using reading in your writing. The focus is essay writing, but the content should be useful for all types of academic work.
The course will include:
- introducing and concluding work
- making your purpose clear
- citation and referencing
- using reading in your writing
- making your voice clear when using sources
- avoiding plagiarism
- structuring an academic essay
- considering marking criteria when planning an essay
- analysing essay questions
- paragraphing
- academic style
