A list of specialist helpline, text-based and in-person support services.

You will find a list of confidential specialist organisations, helplines and services below. Please note, this is not an exhaustive list and not all of the services listed offer out of hours support. Please use the links provided for more information.

General Support Services

Samaritans

Whatever you’re going through you can call the Samaritans for free, any time.  They offer support 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.  You don’t have to be feeling suicidal to call them.

Callers who are deaf or who have hearing or speech impairments can use the Next Generation Text (NGT) service

Papyrus

For young people under the age of 35 who have been thinking about taking their own life or have tried to harm themselves or those who are concerned about a young person.

SANE

A leading UK mental health charity which offers emotional support and information to anyone affected by mental ill-health including family, friends and carers.  This includes support lines, stories and blogs.

SANEline: 0300 304 7000 (4.30pm – 10.30pm)

SANE Textcare: a text services that allows you to arrange for messages of support at times that are right for you e.g. a regular time when you notice you feel lonely or isolated or a specific time when you would like some extra support such as before attending an appointment.  For more information and to access this service please see here.

BAME/Minority Ethnic Support Services

The Black, African and Asian Therapy Network

An independent organisation specialising in working psychologically - informed by an understanding of intersectionality - with people who identify as Black, African, South Asian and Caribbean.

Muslim Counsellor & Psychotherapist Network

A network providing resources to the public. Their Counselling Directory lists professional, qualified and trained Muslim Counsellors, Psychotherapists & Psychologists, who work privately.

Nafsiyat - Intercultural Therapy Centre

Offers short term intercultural therapy to people from diverse backgrounds who live in Islington, Camden, Haringey and Enfield.

Imkaan

Offers a comprehensive list of support services in the UK for BAME women who are affected by violence.

Muslim Women's Network UK

A national charity working to improve social justice and equality for Muslim women and girls.  They offer a faith and culturally sensitive counselling service, as well as a helpline which offers information, support, guidance and referrals for those who are suffering from or at risk of abuse or facing problems on a range of issues.

Muslim Community Helpline

A confidential, non-judgemental listening and emotional support service.

The Black Students Mental Health Project

Good Thinking has partnered with the Black Students Mental Health Project (BSMHP) to host a range of mental wellbeing resources, including blogs, podcasts and videos, which have been created by the black community within London South Bank University (LSBU).

LGBT+ Support Services

London Friend

A specialist service developed to improve the health and mental well-being of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered people (LGB&T).  For further information please visit their website.

An anti-violence charity offering emotional and practical support for LGBT+ victims of hate crime, sexual violence or domestic abuse.

A charity that supports LGBTQ+ young people aged 16-25 in the UK who are facing or experiencing homelessness or living in a hostile evnironment.

Victim Support

Text Relay and Interpretation

Supportline also has an interpretation service for those who do not speak English as a first language.

The Havens

If you have been the victim of rape or sexual assault within the last 12 months, The Havens can help. They offer urgent medical examinations and can be contacted 24 hours a day.  They provide support at three London locations depending on your preference. You don’t have to be referred or speak to the police to use this service.

You can find your nearest, alternative rape and sexual assault referral centre here.  These services provide support to victims/survivors of rape or sexual assault regardless of whether you choose to report the offence to the police.  They provide a provide space for interviews and medical examinations.  Some may also offer counselling services.

Domestic Violence Support Services

Before you call helpline services you are advised to ensure that you are safe when you call the helpline.  This means that the perpetrator of the abuse is not in the same property as you (even if they are in another room, the garden or asleep), to avoid your call being overheard.  Please note, there may be a slight delay to your call being answered so try to ensure that you have sufficient time during which to make a call, safely.

Women’s aid

A service offering a national 24 hour helpline for female victims of domestic violence

Support, advice and information on a range of anxiety and anxiety-based depression conditions.
