Quick guide to Moodle
What is Moodle?
Moodle is the University’s online learning environment, where you’ll find module information, access resources and submit assignments. All you need to login is access to the internet and your City username and password, and you are ready to go. City’s Moodle has been designed responsively so you can access Moodle on your phone or tablet.
Below is some more useful information so that you can become a Moodle expert in no time.
How to use Moodle
Logging in
Moodle can be accessed from the Student Hub header or directly from the link to Moodle.
All you will need is your IT Username (e.g. abcd123) and your password. If you have forgotten your Moodle password, contact the IT Service Desk on 020 7040 8181 or log a query on the IT Self-Service Portal.
The Homepage
Once logged in, you will be directed to the Moodle Homepage, My Moodle. This provides access to your enrolled modules, as well as module updates.
- The ‘My Modules’ tab lists all modules on your course.
- You can add modules to the ‘My Favourites’ tab. This is a quick and easy way to find the modules you access most frequently.
- There is a search bar to find any module. You’ll only be able to access modules you are enrolled on or which are open for self-enrolment.
- Recently accessed modules can be found on the homepage once you start accessing modules..
- The ‘Activity Feed’ displays module updates including, posts to forums and enables you to visit the updated content in one click.
- You'll also find upcoming event and module assessment deadlines in the Timeline.
- At the top of the page, you will find a toolbar or a collapsed menu icon if you are accessing on a mobile. It stays at the top of the page wherever you are on Moodle. From here you can return to My Moodle or select a module from your My Modules or My Favourites tabs.
Your module page
Once you have clicked on a module, you will find quick links and activities at the top of your page.
Quick links explained
- Reading lists: quickly find the books and journal articles you’ll need for your module.
- Timetable: does what it says on the tin - this provides a link to your Timetable.
- Grader report: once your assignment has been marked, you’ll be able to see your grades from Grader report.
- Calendar: find deadlines or important dates for your module.
- Students, Lecturers and Course Officers buttons: find the email addresses of your course mates, teaching and admin staff.
- Lecture Capture: Some of your lectures may be recorded for you to use as a revision resource. You can find the links to recorded lectures from the link to Lecture Capture in each module. Remember you will still be expected to attend even if the session is being Lecture Captured.
Activities explained
These options will change depending on what activities are being used on your module.
- Assignments/Turnitin Assignments/Video Assignments: you can use these options to submit your assignments. Remember to review guidance about the format and content of your assignment prior to submitting.
- Forums: Lecturers may encourage you to ask questions about the module or engage you in discussions on the module content using the ‘Forum’. This is a great resource because it means others on your module will be able to learn from responses and questions posted.
How are my modules organised?
Your modules will normally be laid out in two columns. The main column includes activities and resources which are organised in topics or by week.
Module with expandable topics
Where only the header of a topic or week is visible, click on the header to open and view the content available. Select Open all to view all content available on a module.
Remember to check Moodle regularly, as it is the main way to access module content.
