As a student at City, you are eligible to apply for a wide range of free language courses on the Languages for General Purposes (LGP) programme. The courses are designed to develop and improve your language skills from beginner level up to advanced.

The Centre for Language Studies offers the following languages and levels:

  • French, German and Spanish - beginner, lower and upper intermediate and advanced
  • Arabic – beginner and lower intermediate levels
  • Russian and Mandarin – beginner

Teaching is interactive and focuses on practical use of the foreign language in the context of day-to-day life, training and developing speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. You also work on language structure to be able to do presentations, orally or in a written format whilst developing cultural knowledge related to the target language. Courses run over term 1 and 2 with a 2-hour face-to-face teaching session per week.

The registration process for the 2023/24 courses is now live. For courses that are above ‘Beginner’ level, you will be asked to complete a diagnostic test so they can establish your competency in your chosen language.

Register your interest for a language course.

The deadline for your registering your interest is 1pm on Friday 29 September 2023.

As there is high demand and a limited number of spaces available for the LGP courses, particularly at beginner level, places will be allocated using a 'lottery system'. Make sure you follow the application process correctly before the deadline to be entered into the lottery. Remember that studying a language is a commitment and please consider this before you apply for a course.
