Forthcoming graduation ceremony dates
As a result of the evolving situation regarding the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, details of physical ceremonies are to be confirmed.
Register for your graduation
If you are eligible to be invited to a graduation ceremony, whether you have been recently awarded your degree or if you are approaching the end of your course, you will receive an email from the Graduation Team with information about how to register, buy guest tickets and hire your academic dress. You can do all of this online.
Booking usually opens around 12 weeks ahead of the actual event, so if you have not received an email in that time and believe you should have been invited to register for a ceremony, please email us.
Please note the below information applies to physical ceremonies, which will be scheduled at a later date when it is safe to do so.
Buy tickets for your physical graduation
Graduands are admitted to the ceremony free of charge. We can offer each graduand the opportunity to purchase guest tickets at a cost of £25 per ticket - this includes a post-ceremony reception for all guests and new graduates.
You will receive an email inviting you to register for the ceremony and to purchase guest tickets 12 weeks before your ceremony.
Extra guest tickets
The number of guest tickets attending graduands can purchase will be determined closer to the ceremonies opening for booking, and this will be the maximum available to purchase but further tickets may be available once the registration deadline has passed and we are able to assess attendee numbers.
Once the number of tickets available to graduands has been finalised, this page will be updated with that information, and this will also be confirmed in your email invitation.
Please be aware that due to the size of the venue, the expected number of attendees and any health and safety requirements that may be necessary due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it is unlikely that extra tickets will be available, however you can register your interest in obtaining extra tickets during the online booking process.
In doing so, you will be notified of and extra availability in the week leading up to the ceremony.
Visas for you and your guests for physical graduation
City holds its graduation ceremonies at the Barbican Arts Centre twice a year, in July and January. The exact dates of the ceremonies vary from year to year due to the availability of the venue, but they tend to be in the second or third week of July, and the third or fourth week of January in any given year.
This means that occasionally graduation will take place some time after your course has finished so you may need to apply for a visa to return to the UK to attend your ceremony, so here is some practical advice to help you.
If you have a Student visa that expires before the date of your graduation, you must return to you home country before it expires and return to the UK on a tourist visa.
If you change the type of visa you have before graduation, for example if you get a job here, then you will no longer be bound by the Student visa regulations, but subject to the rules of your new visa you may be able to attend graduation.
Your guests may need a visas to come to your graduation and information about Visitor visas for family is available on the City website.
The venue for City, University of London's graduation ceremonies is The Barbican Centre, on Silk Street in the City of London.
The Barbican is Europe's largest multi-arts venue and is located between Barbican and Moorgate underground stations, and close to Liverpool Street and Farringdon railway stations.
Further information on the venue can be found on the Barbican Centre website.
