From Saturday 1st June, landlords and agents are banned by law from charging any extra fees in the letting process.

The ban was announced in the House of Lords, and it means that no admin fees will be charged on tenancies signed on or after this date.

The law is particularly important to international students who rent private property, providing more clarity about the charges they are required to pay. For example, upfront, non-refundable fees are now excluded from the letting process.

If you’re a continuing or new student looking for private accommodation in London, watch out for the fees you are charged this summer - make sure they only include the rent, the deposit, the utilities and other fees discussed in this article.
