It’s important to know the facts around and regularly test for sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

City has been informed that cases of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and gonorrhoea in particular, has sharply risen.

In-depth and up-to-date information about STIs is available on the NHS website.

You can buy condoms in most newsagents and supermarkets – you can find where the nearest free condom services are in your area on the NHS website.

Most STIs can be easily treated with antibiotics, but others are harder to treat. STIs can cause serious health issues if left untreated, this is one of the reasons why regular STI and HIV testing is essential.

Testing is free, non-judgemental and confidential. You can find the nearest sexual health clinics in your area on the NHS website, which also has a guide on what to expect when visiting a sexual health clinic.

If you do not have symptoms and would like a routine check-up, you may prefer to use a STI self-sampling kit. You can find out which services in your area offer these kits on the Sexwise website.

STIs are very common, with over 300,000 people in the UK being diagnosed with an STI in 2020. If you would like to speak to a member of City’s Counselling service, you can do so through the Student Heath & Wellbeing e-Referral form. Your personal details will not be shared.
