The prize offers students £1,500 to take on a journalism project abroad.

Breaking into journalism is harder than ever. However, the need for real reporting and accurate evidence-based journalism has never been greater. In memory of the life and career of Rupert Cornwell, an award-winning foreign correspondent over much of the last 40 years, The Rupert Cornwell Trust has been set up to provide financial assistance to support actual or aspiring young foreign correspondents for short periods of foreign travel and reporting in the field.
The Trust are offering a prize of £1,500 to a Postgraduate Journalism student to encourage excellence in foreign reporting.
Applicants must be studying full time in the academic year 2023/24 on one of City's MA Postgraduate Journalism courses.
To apply, students are invited to set out a proposal to report a significant story outside of the UK in one of the following locations: Europe, countries in the ex-Soviet Union or North America. This could be a news story, investigation or feature undertaken for publication in any major platform (video, audio, photographic, infographic or text). The proposal/pitch for the story should be no more than 400 words, set out in a word document.
The prize winner is expected to treat the prize in the spirit it is awarded. It is awarded on the basis that the prize winner will use the funding to travel and complete the story in the year it is awarded. If the prize winner is unable to start or complete the project the funding will be returned to the funders. The prize winner will be expected to sign an Indemnity Agreement with the Rupert Cornwell Trust.

The deadline for applications is Saturday 1 June 2024. The prize winner will be notified by Monday 1 July 2024.
