Fire emergency procedure

City students are responsible for keeping everyone safe and should familiarise themselves with the fire safety procedure.

At City we take fire safety and the safety of our students and staff extremely seriously.

In a fire emergency swift action is required.

We need all students to assist us in keeping everyone safe in a fire emergency.

How you can help us keep you safe

Ensure you:

  • Familiarise yourself with all available fire exits in the buildings you use; this includes your student accommodation
  • Identify where the assembly points are for the buildings you use. These can be found on the map below, with the nearest one to your current location displayed on the fire action notices located next to call points, entrances, exits and in lecture rooms. This will be the same for student accommodation.

What to do in the event of a fire

If you discover a fire

1. Do not attempt to put a fire out.

2. Leave the room the fire is in and, if safe to do so, shut the door as you leave.

3. Raise the Alarm by pressing a red call point immediately. These are found across campus on the walls.

Pressing the call point will activate the fire alarm, informing others to leave the building. It will also inform Security who will respond to the incident.

4. Make your way to the designated assembly point for the building, leaving by your nearest safe available fire exit route – shown by green arrow signage from the ceilings. Make sure you tell others to leave as you exit and do not stop to gather your belongings.

5. Wait at the designated assembly point for further instruction from City’s Security staff or the London Fire Brigade. Do not re-enter the building until told it is safe to do so by those co-ordinating the evacuation. Please stay at the assembly point so you can be accounted for (wandering off could mean that a fire fighter enters the building in an unnecessary attempt to find you).
