The City Travel Bursary

The City Travel Bursary is funded by City, University of London to provide financial support towards travelling costs for home foundation and undergraduate students from low household incomes.

New applications for the City Travel Bursary program are currently unavailable. Students can still apply for the City Hardship Fund.

What support is available

Eligible students can apply for a £200 City Travel Bursary to help with their travel costs onto City’s campus during the 2023/24 academic year. The bursary will be paid in two equal instalments £100 during Term 1 and £100 during Term 2.

Who can apply

Students must meet all the eligibility criteria below:

  • Home foundation or undergraduate students at City, University of London including Urdang undergraduates in Year 1 and 2;
  • Enrolled full-time for the 2023/24 academic year;
  • Household income* of £25,000 or less as assessed by Student Finance England (SFE).

*Both students and their sponsors (parents, partner or guardians) must give consent to share their household income with City, University of London. For queries about consent please contact Student Finance England directly.

You are not eligible for this bursary if you are:

  • on a distance learning courses
  • on a short courses
  • enrolled for part-time study
  • not enrolled for the 2023/24 academic year
  • a postgraduate student
  • an international student.

How to apply

Applications are currently closed.

  • Complete the City Travel Bursary online application form and upload evidence of two weeks of travel costs e.g. TfL oyster ticket log, rail ticket log or bank statement
  • Ensure your SFE assessed household income is shared with City

Applications will be assessed in order of receipt, normally within 10 working days.

Students can only apply to the City Travel Bursary once per academic year.

Application outcomes are final and cannot be appealed.

Terms and conditions

Students must be enrolled for the current academic year 2023/24 at the point of application and until the end of the current academic year.

Incomplete applications will not be considered. Applications without complete evidence of travel, household income data not shared via SFE, incomplete application forms will not be considered for a bursary.

The assessment outcome will be final and cannot be appealed.  

Students’ attendance and engagement may be factored into the assessment of applications.  

Recipients are required to participate in the evaluation process of the City Travel Bursary and Blackbullion money management platform. Recipients will be contacted by related City departments later in the academic year.

If recipients’ enrolment status changes from enrolled to dormant, suspended or withdrawn the bursary may need to be repaid to City, University of London.
